Custer’s Last Stand

May 11th, 2007

I’ve been writing (and you’ve been reading) a lot about digital media rights lately – YouTube, Viacom, etc. So when I read this quote today, I had to share it with you:

“The Googles of the world, they are the Custer of the modern world. We are the Sioux nation. They will lose this war if they go to war. The notion that the new kids on the block have taken over is a false notion.”
Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons on copyright tussles.

Parsons’ quote left me reeling. You would think the CEO of Time Warner would know better than to equate his company to a group of people that may have won the battle, but definitely lost the war. His shortsighted view of history exposes his similarly shortsighted view of the business world.

A war over media turf is starting to appear inevitable. In the meantime, the digital media arms race continues to build up.
